NATURAL JOYFUL FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY - Washington Family Photographer

My Approach to Joyful Family Photographs -with Storytelling and True Connection

I absolutely love photographing PNW families. I do love my West Seattle peeps (shout out)

There’s a difference between posing a family… and seeing a family.

My approach lives somewhere in between — a blend of documentary storytelling and gentle guidance that allows your connection to unfold naturally, while still creating images that feel intentional and beautiful.

My approach is less awkward posing, less matching outfits, and futile efforts to bribe kids into smiling at the camera (although I always make sure to get some images like that)

Time passes in a heartbeat, and I think the moments we want to remember are the ones that feel most like you.

I’m all about photographing your family in your home, a local park that you love, or some fun adventurous location. Whatever you love most about life with your little family, I’d love to be along to document it.

Guided, So You Never Feel Lost

Even though my style is documentary-inspired, you won’t be left wondering what to do.

I guide you the entire time — but in a way that feels natural, not forced.

You might hear things like:

  • “Walk toward me, slowly, just holding hands”

  • “Pull them in close and whisper something funny”

  • “Let them be a little wild here”

These prompts create movement and connection, so your photos feel alive instead of staged.

More Than a Photoshoot

This experience is about more than what the images look like. It’s about how it feels to be fully present with your family — without distractions, without pressure, without needing everything to be perfect.

When you trust the process and lean into the moment, what unfolds is honest, connected, and deeply meaningful. My goal isn’t just to give you beautiful photos. It’s to give you something real.

Images that reflect your family as you truly are — the love, the chaos, the softness, the joy — all held in a way that feels both natural and artfully guided.

Because those are the moments you’ll want to remember most.

Letting the Environment Be Part of the Story

This isn’t about staying perfectly clean or polished.

It’s about:

  • kids getting a little muddy

  • wind tangling your hair

  • laughter that isn’t perfectly timed

Those “imperfect” moments are where the real beauty lives.

I LOVE Incorporating nature into your photos. Not only is it part of my style and life — it’s about letting it become part of the story. Whether you’re surrounded by the red rocks of Sedona or the soft, mossy landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, the environment shapes how you move, connect, and feel. The wind, the light, the textures of the earth — they all add depth and emotion in a way nothing artificial can. When you lean into it—bare feet in the dirt, hands brushing against trees, sunlight wrapping around you- pine cones in your hand—the result is imagery that feels grounded, alive, and deeply connected to something bigger than the moment itself.

Gently guided, never forced.
Documentary, but intentional.
Artful, but real.

So when you look back at your images, you don’t just see how it looked…

You remember how it felt to be together in that moment — surrounded by the calm, wild beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

Lean Into Earthy, Muted Tones

The PNW is full of deep greens, cool blues, and neutral textures.

The best colors to wear:

  • Cream, beige, soft white

  • Olive, sage, - forest green can get lost in the trees

  • Rust, clay, warm browns

  • Dusty blue, charcoal, muted tones

  • Burnt Orange really pops in the green trees

  • Black is great on the beach but can get lost in the dark trees. But wear it by all means, we can work with it.

Avoid bright neons or overly bold patterns — they compete with the natural beauty around you.

  • Neutral boots or simple sandals

  • Barefoot on the beach or in grassy areas

Avoid bright athletic shoes or anything too distracting.

The most important thing:

Wear something that feels like you.

If you’re comfortable, you’ll move more naturally.
If you feel good, it shows in every photo.
