How to do family photos LIKE A BOSS after divorce-Seattle Family Photographer

Hello!

I have a lot of “divorcees” ask me how to do the family photos if you’ve gone through a divorce.

This is totally normal and totally something you can do because the most important thing is that you are still a family after all -so of course we can do this!

The session runs about the same as before, except we make more photos of each parent with the kids solo, which we do anyway -to showcase the different personalities and dynamics of all of your relationships.

SO YES YES YES- If your a mom or dad and you booked the shoot, and you want dad/mom to join for the whole shoot or just pop in for a few photos at the beginning or the end, the answer is yes!!! You can absolutely do this. There are no rules to this.

This family is still a full on bad ass unit, but mom and dad are just not together anymore (in that way) however, they will still be forever connected for their girls. I like to think of a family photo shoot as kind of like a mood board, if you think about it. I’m not here to pretend I know everyone’s relationship and I know this is not always an easy situation. But I am just here to tell you this families story and how they deal with the twice yearly family photo sessions. They are truly special humans, and I am so grateful to be their family photographer, no matter what the state of the family is. I love to tell your story.

Like a boss.

Why you should consider an Adventure Family Photo Session- Seattle Family Photographer

Want to make your family photos super duper memorable and go the extra mile (literally) to make them beautiful?

I have tons of information on what to wear and location ideas for your family photo shoot you guys! Gold Creek Pond is special to this family because Travis (a.k.a dad) grew up coming here with his family, and has fond memories of being here with his father. Not only that there is no hike so most of the work is just an hour drive outside of Seattle. And it’s a lovely drive. Even if you choose a location based on it’s beauty alone- it makes the whole family just a little more pumped when they are there for family photos. Being someplace new and exciting is fun for the kids or if your a couple - you can’t beat this beautiful backdrop.

Things to bring. Snacks, maybe a pretty blanket, bug spray, and a warm and (photographable) coat for the kiddos if you have them. Accessories are always fun too, hats scarves, even flowers.

Thank you to Travis, Kelly, Dylan, and Ragen! I have been photographing this family since the their first born was in the belly for maternity photos- so it is an honor to continue to document them! I love this family!

What to do if your toddler doesn't behave at a family session - Seattle Family Photographer

A lot of parents get very nervous about this topic, and rightfully so. But don’t worry! I got you!

The little ones just might have their own agenda that day- and we are there to try and shape that as best we can for an hour or so. So we roll with it.

This little gal is Vera. She is very spirited and wonderful. She was perfectly listening to me at the beginning of our shoot for the first oh, five minutes. And then she just went rogue! It was awesome… running wild, talking to trees, not wanting anything to do with our plan. We just had to get creative, work a little harder, pull out some tricks, maybe a few bribes along the way. (hint: ice cream)

This post is just so all of you parents know that your child doesn’t have to sit and pose for an hour or more during our session. We take breaks between those posed family photos to go hog wild out in nature. If they need a snack we take a break. Time and time again I have left a session like this, my hair all wild from crawling on the ground or playing in the bushes, filthy jeans, and I will think “what just happened did I get that?”

EVERY single time so much good happens. So we can relax, we can stay calm, use bribes and do our best. But if the kids go rouge- don’t worry I will follow! I can get rogue too.

I delivered 138 photos of this session to this amazing family. WE CAPTURED HER SONS FIRST CRAWL!

This session was nothing short of amazing and with a wild child in the mix. Bring it on, I love it.
